Well it depends on what you are trying to do. If you go the dedicated Linux server route you can use something like ISPConfig. I will be writing a tutorial of how to earn money from a dedicated server using ISPConfig in the near future

Wow, that is very cool. I always wondered how much money was to be made on those stock photo sites as with the number of images listed on them it’s easy to think that the competition would be quite intense.

But referring people on to it seems a whole lot easier than waiting for your photos to sell.

I think this comment is on the wrong post but never mind…

Yes I sell with all those on the site and more. The site I was referring to was one which to be honest I had forgotten about until I got a newsletter from them, so it was a pleasant surprise. There are literally hundreds of stock photo sites that allow you to sell your pictures. I do quite well out of selling them. Not enough for that to be my only income but still it all helps.

I have released a new version to correct an error in the addsite.php file.

If you have already downloaded and setup the Google Rank Monitor software all you need to do is get the zip package again and replace the addsite.php file and all else will work as normal.

I have done a lot of link building via freelancers with mixed results. You can get onto places such as the Digital Point forums to find people, but do ask questions and look at previous work they have done.

Find someone you can trust and stick with them is my advice.

Susan, Thanks for your encouraging comments! All I really do is jot down my own musings in the hope that it maybe of some interest and maybe even use to others, sadly I do not get as much time as I would like to dedicate to writing, but in the moments I get I do try and keep the blog up-to-date with what I doing in my little affiliate world.

I’ve been waiting three months for Evans to update their datafeed now and I’ve just realised that loads of their products are now dead links it’s been that long – they don’t even say they are sold out or redirect to the homepage! To kill it all they’ve increased commissions to 10% for the next month – but how am I supposed to take advantage of that – it’s so frustrating!

Thanks for your comments, I use AffMeter quite extensively and like you I spend the time setting up my own categories of products. However the project I am currently working on is or a much larger scale which is why I am being hampered so much by these issues.

I took the time last night to email 5 of the merchants affiliate managers, lets wait and see if anything comes back! I don’t hold out much hope, but if everyone did the same perhaps some action will happen.

I’ve emailed the affiliate manager three times now lol. As a plus to the dire datafeed situation it pushed me to find other creative ways to promote Merchants without datafeeds in the same sector and my earnings did rise dramtaically.
Also regarding your problem with the categories there is a free script called Affilistore which creates datafeed sites and enables you to easily build your own custom navigatigation.

Don’t do it until you have enough money saved in the bank to cover at least 6 months (preferrably 12) worth of bill payments, i.e. mortgage, utilities etc. Its a really big step so the bigger the safety net the better. Good luck!

I am wondering what can be done about this. As you say there are times when if you want to continue with a project you have no choice.

I have spent 3 hours this evening sorting out a datafeed moving products into the correct categories, the problem with this is that when I want to update that datafeed what do I do? I have to do it all again, this is something that the merchant should be doing, not just throwing out a database of products without any thought or effort.

One thing I think is worthwhile and maybe we can start some kind of campaign, if everyone emailed the affiliate manager for their relevant merchant whenever they had any of these problems, perhaps that would highlight the issue to both the networks and the merchants and maybe just maybe we will get some movement and improvement on the datafeeds.

I know exactly how you feel. I have a website that uses the datafeed of a merchant that has not updated it since the 16th of January! Unfortunately they have no suitable competitors that have feeds so I’m stuck with them.

On the top navigation bar, you’ve got “Baroadband” – not sure whether this is intentional.

Not sure if it’s feasible but a postcode or telephone checker may be useful to then restrict offers available to certain people.

The domain’s good and I suppose there’s a lot of scope to develop this further. Tough market though!

#7. is a great tip. I think people tend to get lazy and overlook being original. Originality can make or break your sales. No buyer wants to buy something after they read the same sales page on 300 different sites, all for the same product.

Off line advertising is a very good point. Something that is often forgotten. It is easy to make sure your web address is included on all your companies printed material, but also worth considering printed pens, cups and the like that you can give away a freebies to get your name and web address known.

I agree that if you focus on search engine marketing and nothing else your site could be boring and not actually attract the clicks you want. When a user gets to your site there has to be more then just one reason to stay. Blogs, Newsletters, even offline advertising are all important to the over-all process.
